Frequently Asked Questions

For the engineers

Who runs the Open Sessions?

Each Open Session is run by two head recording engineers, at least two assistant recording engineers, and in some cases, mixing and mastering engineers. The amount of assistant engineers for a given session is at the discretion of the head engineers. Larger sessions will need more hands than smaller sessions.

How do I become a head engineer?

All Open Sessions are located in the Gavett Recording Studio. This means you must have completed AME 192 and have been trained in Gavett to a point where Prof. Roessner deems you capable of running a session with a client in a professional and efficient manner. Students currently enrolled in AME 192 must wait until after their 6th week of class to volunteer to be a Recording or Mixing engineer.

Can I shadow the engineers?

Absolutely! Shadowing Open Sessions is a great way to learn about signal flow in Gavett and to learn from more experienced student engineers. It is best to contact the engineer(s) who is/are working the session so they can keep track of who will be assisting them. They can also decide how many assistants they can handle for the session.
